Did you know that Durham, North Carolina, was named the “Tastiest Town in the South” by Southern Living magazine in 2013? The town even beat New Orleans for the title, which makes it clear that there are plenty of great places to eat in the town. However, good eating doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, there are a lot of budget friendly restaurants near Duke University that offer an excellent and affordable meal. That is good news to Duke students that are interested in eating out in town without breaking the bank. Read on to learn about several excellent options for dining on a budget in Durham.

Pub Fare

There are plenty of pub-style restaurants in town that will offer patrons quality food and service at a great price. For example, there is Bull City Burger & Brewery on East Parrish Street. Their burger buns are baked in-house, their beef is sourced in North Carolina, and their produce comes from local farms. Plus, they offer a tour of their brewery on Saturdays at 4 pm. Tobacco Road Sports Café is another eatery of choice for patrons that want to eat great food and have a great venue to watch the game. Expect their country fried chicken, baby back ribs, burgers, and other delicious meals to be made with local ingredients. Fans of pub food should also give G2B a try. They offer New American cuisine with top quality craft beers brewed on the premises.

BBQ

If you are interested in trying cuisine that is truly local in Durham, you have to try the barbecue. One option is Bullocks Bar-B-Cue, which is located very close to Duke and has specialized in pig pickings since 1952. They also have great choices for dessert available. Hog Heaven Bar-B-Cue is also a great choice for dining in, though you can also order at their walk-up window and drive-through. Hog Heaven is known for their ribs, barbecued chicken, and fried fish. A newer establishment in town is Backyard Pit BBQ, founded in 2007. Instead of a regular commercial cooking operation, Backyard Pit actually cooks their food over a pit with hickory and oak wood.

Food Trucks

Everyone’s schedules are keeping them moving these days, and Durham’s finest eateries are answering this trend with food trucks that can move to where the customers are hanging out! Alivia’s Durham Bistro launched a food truck as a mobile offshoot to their brick and mortar location. The food truck offers some of the restaurant’s classic entrees along with some new entrees in testing, but all of the truck’s offerings are healthy, quick, and delicious! Baguettaboutit is an exclusively mobile service with the best sausage sandwiches in town. Check out their website to see where their truck will be next so you can catch one of their delicious sandwiches! Then there is Gussy’s Greek Street Food truck, offering the best gyros, hummus, and baklava on the go. You can find them at most major events in the area, or by looking at their calendar on their website.
